Beyond Magic

Format: Novel
Status: 40% drafted

Dark forces are rising across the seas. An orphan boy is about to have his destiny changed forever when an ancient spirit is released from a long captivity. A mellenium dead empire will be reborn. In the depths of the forest, another threat is readying itself. The Kingdom has enemies on all sides, although it does not know it. A war is coming and the five races will all be sucked into the conflict.

A young man discovers he has magical powers and is sent away to train as a mage. In doing so, he meets the twin daughter and son of the powerful lord whose court is now his home. Together with the help of a dwarven warrior, an orcish princess, and a rogue elf on a dream-quest, they will be sent on an adventure to save the Kingdom from the ravages of war. And then there are the Giants. Will they too join the war, and if so, which side will they choose?

Excerpt

He ran with the reckless joy of youth. The path was narrow and wound around large, pockmarked boulders, strewn about the dry, grassy hillside, as though scattered there by some immense titan. Dust rose with each footfall, the acrid smell mingling with that of the grass before wafting away. He saw no one as usual for the path was little used except by occasional shepherds and their goats. He quickened his gait, revelling in the wind’s kiss on his face.

Aeth, last of the Daelratha, and his faerieguide, Neith, live a precarious existence hiding from the fanatics of the mighty Empire of the Blue Flame Path. Their destiny is forever changed when they meet a young woman with mysterious origins, cast out by her people. Can the three of them escape the clutches of their tireless hunters? Against terrible odds can they liberate their homeland from the hated empire and its accursed new religion?

Excerpt

Aeth, cursed inwardly—where in hell’s breath was Neith? What is the point of having a faerieguide, if she is never here when I need her? He would just have to fight these bastards on his own. They were advancing now, swords drawn.

Siren Sword

Format: Novel
Status: 10% drafted

The Greylands are a grim and dangerous place, forever in the shadow of the vast and forbidding Volgarian Mountain range. It is the land of the Vaelarian people. A place of impregnable fortresses. A place where demons walk the land and warriors must be ever vigilant and unyielding.

Velenir and Kelrin, still but children, are caught up in the darkness of their homeland. Within the space of a day both will have their worlds ripped apart by death and an unforgiving society. Thrown together by chance they will seek to build a new life together, if they can survive long enough to do so.

Kelrin dreams of forging a legendary Siren Sword of old while Velenir is plagued by a sense of impending doom she does not understand. Only by relying on each other can they overcome the hostile and violent world around them. Both are drawn to the old ways of magic and myth so shunned by their pairs. Even to speak of the old ways is a dangerous activity. The flame of magic is dying in the Greylands and only time will tell if it can be rekindled.

Excerpt

'What do you know of Siren Swords?’ she said, breaking the silence.

‘Not much but my father has told me what he knows. They were first created by the master smiths of the old world before the Flight of the Vaelarian Remnants to the Greylands. They are imbued with a special magic that draws the demonkind to them while gradually draining them of their own dark magic. Siren Swords grow stronger as they draw in the dark power of the demons they slay. However, the more dark magic they absorb the more difficult they are to wield. Only the strongest of the ancient heroes could use a Siren Sword that had slain many demons. The oldest Siren Swords became so twisted by dark magic that they were entombed in stone in the great mausoleums of fallen heroes.’ Whispering now, he added, ‘Some say that the destruction of the old world was brought about by the collective dark magic of the retired Siren Swords. That it was one day let loose on the land and a vast demon invasion followed driving our ancestors to flee their homeland.’
